Punctuation Marks in English

Punctuation marks :- punctuation is the system of symbols that we use in writing in order to express our feeling in written English.

Punctuation marks:- प्रतीकों की वह प्रणाली हैं, जिसका उपयोग हम लिखित रूप में अपनी भावनाओं को लिखित अंग्रेजी में व्यक्त करने के लिए करते हैं 

There are 15 punctuation marks:

1. Full stop (.)

2. Question mark (?)

3. Exclamation mark (!)

4. Comma (,)

5. Semicolon (;)

6. Colon (:)

7. Quotation marks (" ")

8. Apostrophe (')

9. Ellipsis (...)

10. Dash (—)

11. Hyphen (-)

12. Parantheses ( () )

13. Braces ({})

14. Brackets ( [ ] )

15. Slash (/)

                        1. Full stop

                  (Ending of Sentences)

It is used when statement is complete.

  • She came at my home.
  • Close the window.
  • She is going to market.
                Used for abbreviations.
Abbreviations can be written with or without the 'full stop'.

a.m - Before Midday
p.m. - After Midday
e.g. - for example
etc. - And so on.
i.e. - in other words / that is
             Personal Titles
Mr. - mister
Dr. Doctor
Mrs. - misses
Miss. - mistress
            Education
B.A. - bachelor of arts
M.A. - master of arts
M.B.A. - master of business
Consists only of the first parts of a word.
Mon. - Monday
Jan. - January
Hr. - Hour
Sec. - second
Min. - minute
             2. Question Mark (?)
Indicates a direct Question.
  • When will you study?
  • Where do you live?
  • Do you have car?
          3. Exclamation Mark (!)
Indicates a sudden emotion / surprise/ anger.
  • Wow!
  • What a nice cat!
  • How fast you run!
             4. Comma (,)
~ Indicates a brief pause.
~ Used to separate items or verb phrases in a sentence.
  • He bought milk, biscuits, cake, and bread.
  • They went to market, purchase some books, and reached home on time.
Use with words that introduce a sentence.
  • Yes, you can go there.
  • No, she can't talk with her.
Used to separate adverb (not a part of the sentence.)
  • Finally, Neha reached home.
  • Unfortunately, we met with a accident.
  • Hopefully, they will pass this exam.
          Used to separate linking words.
  • Priya wanted to see that place. However, She couldn't go there.
  • Sheetal is brilliant student. Therefore, she has passed this competition. 
               5. Semicolon (;)
Connect two independent clauses.
  • Krishna is a student; his father is a shoemaker.
  • She thought it was good; we thought it was not good.
  • Bani loves to eat cake ice-cream and candies; but she doesn't like chocolate.
                   6. Colon (:)
Used after an independent clauses to introduce series, information.
  • She has many items: book, pens, pencils and erasers.
  • I met many people: Kavita, Sahil, Sneha, Nisha and Sikha.
  • There are three types of tenses:
  1. Present tense
  2. Past tense
  3. Future tense
               7. Quotation Marks (" ")
A direct (word - for-word) Quotation.

  • He said, "I don't care."
  • Krishna said, "my favourite subject is 'English'."    
                  8. Apostrophe (')
Used for possession and contraction.
  • Sheetal's phone is on the table.
  • Girls' clothes are in cupboard.
  • Madhu's car is missing.
  • I'm a teacher.
  • She's doing her homework.
  • We're not watching T.V.
                    9. Ellipsis (...)
The omission of word, phrases, line or paragraph.
  • Rani said, " I like apples, orange...
  • My sister went to the town... and arrived home after midnight.
  • I never thought she can...
                   10. Dash (—)
To show range of yours, time, dates and denotes sudden change of thought or to add additional information.
  • 1980 — 2000
  • 11 pm — 12 pm
  • 26 September — 24 December
  • Her friend always goes with me to play in the playground — but he doesn't help in my classroom.
  • Arjun will travels to Jaipur this week — his first trip in India.

To join words or words parts.

                12 Parentheses ( () )
                 (Round brackets)

Separates extra information from the rest of the sentence.
  • Yesterday, my uncle met (Ravi) in college.
  • He gave me a bonus (500/-)

Braces in English language is to indicate choice or preference.
  • Select one item { biscuits, tea, coffee} and wait for your turn.
  • Select any animals { goat, sheep, cow, horse} and come to the market.              
                     14. Brackets ([ ])
                      (Square brackets)
  • It [lighting] is really wonderful.
  • She [Kanika] is very annoying person.
                        15. Slash ( / )
Used to separate the day, month and year.
  • The date today is 17th / 07 / 2021
  • Please explain to the students when she/he arrives.
  • Dear sir / Madam
